Authentic Leadership

Authentic leadership is at the root of cultures of great innovation, engagement, outstanding client experiences, and growth.

Do you find yourself exhausted, disengaged, or uninspired?

Chances are that if this is the case you are not tapping into the energy we all feel when we are inspired by the work we do, connected with our leadership purpose, working with people we enjoy.

Could you be spending too much of your energy suppressing who you really are?

When we are fully authentic and bring our whole selves to work, we feel energized to bring our best contributions to the workplace.

Do you struggle with the pace of change, uncertainty and ambiguity in the workplace?

Learning how to be both authentic, and agile to change, is one of the most critical leadership traits for our times. You can learn how to create within change and ambiguity rather than feel overwhelmed by it.

In this nine-module curriculum, my intention is to help you grow as a leader who is authentic, inspired, and adaptive. Each session is designed as an experience for you to learn by both self-reflection and by practice. You will have access to several leadership assessments, self-reflection worksheets, and learning summaries. We will also have Authenticity Power Practices (APP’s) — powerful guided coaching exercises you can have at your fingertips — your own virtual coach — to help you in your most challenging situations.

Each module below will take about 90 minutes to complete. I recommend one module per week to sustain your momentum and learning. You will have the opportunity to take an assessment in the beginning and one at the end of the course so you can measure your progress and continue to deepen your learning and practice. It is recommended (but not necessary) that you take this course with an accountability partner or even a team so you can practice together.

Module Objectives

Module 1: Step Back, Set Goals, Step In

In joining this course, you are making a powerful commitment to your personal leadership, influence, and impact. This first module helps you set powerful goals and create a sustainable structure that will maximize your learning and practice.

Here’s what we will cover:

  • Discover your most important “why” for joining the course & deeply commit to it.
  • Identify powerful goals you want to achieve and skills you want to grow.
  • Learn about the myths of authentic leadership and a definition of authenticity for today’s times.
  • Get an overview of the Seven Practices of Authenticity from the book Wired for Authenticity.
  • Take the Wired for Authenticity Assessment to help you determine which of the seven authenticity practices are strengths vs. opportunities for development. You will get a customized report.

Module 2: The Practice of “Befriend Your Body”

Befriending your body is critical to the practice of sustained leadership growth. It’s what I call Whole Body Leadership ™. By working with our own bodies, we can grow in our self-awareness, we can practice greater courage in situations, we can have a more powerful presence to become confident influencers, and get unstuck from situations that derail us.

Here’s what we will cover:

  • Discover your own habitual response to stressful situations where you may sabotage yourself.
  • Learn how to return to your authentic self through your body using the latest neuroscience research.
  • Learn an in-the-moment practice to transcend fear and discomfort.
  • Learn powerful practices to grow your executive presence and impact.

Module 3: The Practice of “Stay Curious”

We live in times of high change, ambiguity, and uncertainty. We often work with people who may be very different from us. This requires us to adapt to be effective while being true to our own selves. How do we do that? In these times, the practice of “Stay Curious” is essential. Our brain has a tendency to create decision-making shortcuts through assumptions and beliefs. If you have found yourself derailed at times in your career, it is likely that behavior was caused by an unconscious belief and behaviors that resulted from that belief. These beliefs and assumptions can be about ourselves, other people, situations we face. The problem is that we see these assumptions as The Truth vs. simply a perspective we are holding.

Here’s what we will cover:

  • Discover your leadership purpose and what leadership impact will be most meaningful for you.
  • Learn your own greatest strengths and values, and create “Brand YOU ™” — your authentic leadership brand.
  • Learn how you sabotage yourself through thought patterns that prevent you from achieving your goals.
  • Create an action plan to overcome your inner saboteurs.

Module 4: The Practice of “Let Go”

What do you need to let go of to let your authentic self, emerge? In this module, we will look at what you need to let go of in order to achieve your goals.

Here’s what we will cover:

  • Review the areas where you need to “Let Go” and discover how they impact your leadership.
  • Do a personal review of goals and determine what to let go of in order to achieve your goals.
  • Determine which practices of letting go you want to adopt in the coming week(s).

Module 5: The Practice of “Give Yourself an A”

Giving yourself an A is nothing other than fully accepting yourself as you are, including the parts of yourself that you don’t like. It is very difficult to be both confident and humble in leadership unless you accept both your strengths and your very human shortcomings. Fully accepting yourself allows you to take a stand for what you believe in as well as be open to listening to others’ viewpoints and admitting where you may be wrong. It allows you to accept others’ shortcomings as well, and create a culture of inclusion.

Here’s what we will cover:

  • Discover parts of yourself that you feel are inappropriate in workplace interactions.
  • Learn how bringing that “unacceptable” part of yourself to the workplace can actually improve your leadership range.
  • Create more authentic connections with “difficult” people.

Module 6: The Practice of “Choose Be Before Do”

Whether it is dealing with conflict, or delegating effectively, or dealing with a tough boss, there are certain situations that seem to repeat themselves and challenge us. We stay stuck in the same behavior patterns or confront the same types of challenges. This practice allows you to expand your leadership range so you can be effective in more situations. This practice is the key to adapting while still being true to yourself. You slow down and consciously choose the values most important to you in a given situation. It allows you to decide which part of yourself best serves the moment vs. operating from your leadership defaults or triggers.

Here’s what we will cover:

  • Learn the individual default situations where you seem to continue to be challenged.
  • Learn the tool that will allow you to be both authentic and adaptive in your most challenging situations.
  • Bring this practice to transforming and getting unstuck from persistent challenges.

Module 7: The Practice of “Face the Dragon”

Developing leadership courage is a key component of being an authentic leader. Whether it is the courage to have a difficult conversation, the courage to stretch outside our comfort zones, or the courage to ask for what we want from others, we all need to develop our courage muscles.

Here’s what we will cover:

  • Review your goals. Get clear on the fears that hold you back from the goals that are important.
  • Learn three ways to transcend fear and develop your own personal courage repertoire.
  • Learn and practice the skill of difficult conversations.

Module 8: The Practice of “Dance With Your Dream”

According to Gallup 70% of employees are disengaged. It costs organizations billions of dollars in lost productivity. Importantly we miss the chance of bringing our best strengths and passions to the workplace. This practice helps us create and connect with our dream for our impact in the workplace.

Here’s what we will cover:

  • Revisit your leadership purpose and discover what ignites you.
  • Discover ways to bring what ignites you to the workplace.
  • Create a vision board for your Dream.
  • Make a commitment to the small steps to create momentum on the Dream.

 Module 9: Celebrate & Sustain

As we grow in our own skill sets in being authentic in workplaces, we role-model and create cultures of greater authenticity around us. In this module, we will notice who we have become now, and celebrate our learning and growth.

Here’s what we will cover:

  • Assess your progress by re-taking the “Wired for Authenticity” leadership assessment.
  • Discover the impact of your greater authenticity and adaptability on yourself, your goals as well as others important to you.
  • Pick a friend, team or group of people to teach one of the authenticity practices (you deepen our practice by teaching it).
  • Choose a set of practices that will sustain and deepen your authentic leadership going forward.
  • Print out your Authentic Leadership Online Course Certificate.
